Campus Ministry

The Campus Ministry Team includes all student roles that help with liturgies and other aspects of campus ministry at OLMA. The current Campus Ministry Team roles are Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Eucharist, Lectors, Altar Servers, Retreat Team Leaders, Prayer Planners, Sacristans and Service Team.

Mercy on a Mission

Mercy on a Mission was formed by student-athletes who wanted to use their gifts to help others. Mercy on a Mission members participate in charity runs/walks such as the Tower Run, turkey trots, and polar bear plunges. The goal is to raise money for worthy causes. Everyone is welcome to join.

Mustangs Leading Mustangs

Student-athletes, from grades 10-12, who participate in Our Lady of Mercy Athletics while concentrating their efforts towards academics and service to the athletic department. Mustangs Leading Mustangs are dedicated to supporting each other with spirit, enthusiasm, compassion, and hard work. A member of Mustangs Leading Mustangs is a young woman who participates in at least two athletic programs, as either a player or manager, for all four of her high school years. Her effort is from year to year and is in good academic standing. A member shows good sporting behavior at practice and contests and is always showing the Spirit of Mercy. She is constantly guiding others to follow in the positive play of sports and mentorship. The club also helps to run Spirit Week in the fall and other athletic events throughout the year. The club helps raise money for the Mustang Award through different efforts: bake sales (coincide with Spirit Week and Sports Night) and the MLM Stang Games.

Student Council

According to the Our Lady of Mercy Academy Student Council Constitution, the goal of this club is “to represent the Student Body in order to encourage the cooperation of the faculty, students, administration, and parents toward the common goal of quality education and Christian leadership.” We encourage mutual respect between teachers and students; provide a means for the students to express their feelings and opinions; maintain desirable standards of school spirit, student morale, and community pride; encourage and support club activities beneficial to the students of the school; and initiate, follow-through, and enforce changes in school policy. In addition to attending Student Council meetings, members are required to organize/ lead grade-level meetings and participate in afterschool events such as Open House, Tower Run, Movie Night, and two school dances. School Slates for the following academic year (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary) are elected in the spring; grade representatives are elected in the fall.

OLMA Leadership Club

The OLMA Leadership Club works together to create lasting change starting with the young leaders at Our Lady Of Mercy Academy. The goal of this club is to make a lasting impact in our community through leadership and the core values of the sisters of Mercy. The OLMA Leadership Club partners with the National Youth Leadership Council through the Jane Goodall Institute. Leadership Club members will create their own leadership projects which will be presented at the end-of-year summit. The best projects will be presented at the NYLC summit in Washington, DC. As future leaders, we are obligated to create a better world, following Christ’s teachings, caring for our communities, and giving service to all people. Through this club we demonstrate how passionate OLMA students are about making a change and empowering others to take action.

Women’s Empowerment

The main goal of the club is to empower young women by teaching them appropriate ways to take initiative in their own lives and support others. The club members invite guest speakers to share their experiences. The club sponsors the Fair-Trade sale in December where homemade goods are sold from women in developing nations. Once a year the club sponsors hold a movie night– dedicated to a movie featuring strong women and/or movies that have an important female message.

Ambassadors Club

Our Lady of Mercy Academy’s Student Ambassadors Club consists of a group of students whose main purpose is the positive promotion of OLMA. The Ambassadors Club is open to all students who are active in both academic and extracurricular activities and exhibit enthusiasm for being a Mercy Girl. Upper-class women are given the opportunity to act as Tour Guides and Club Officers after attending various Ambassador trainings. Ambassador responsibilities include helping with Open House and Accepted Student Reception, hosting Shadows, assisting with school visits, greeting or ushering at school events, and attending Ambassador meetings and trainings. Event sign ups are open to all students, while tour guide and leadership positions are available to dedicated club members.

Book Club

The Book Club consists of students who love to read and talk about what they read! It gives students a chance to discuss works outside of the curriculum while helping to foster both their love of reading and friendships across grade levels. Books from past meetings range from the classics to modern best-sellers and new Young Adult novels. At the end of each meeting, club members suggest and vote on the work to be read for the upcoming month.

Ethics Club

Ethics Club provides students with an opportunity to research and discuss a series of case studies selected by the National High School Ethics Bowl (NHSEB). We review an analytical approach to evaluating ethical issues and steps to developing well-reasoned, clearly articulated arguments. Teams participate in the Long Island Ethics Bowl, an annual event sponsored by the Squire Foundation and Hofstra University.

Math Club

The goal of the club is to promote a love of and interest in math outside of the classroom and to work on test-taking strategies. We compete in the Catholic Math League against other Catholic High Schools on 4 tests per year in each subject level: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Advanced Math (math beyond Algebra II).

Mock Trial

Mock Trial is a club that enables students to gain first-hand knowledge of civil and criminal law and courtroom procedures. Mock Trial teaches students about ethics, civility, and professionalism, as well as improves the vital skill of public speaking. Mock Trial is a competition in which students simulate a real trial. The trial concerns an official case that remains the same throughout the entire academic year. Teams consist of six or more members, but only six compete at any given time – 3 attorneys and 3 witnesses. The Criminal or Civil Case is given by the Nassau Bar Association to be present during winter in Nassau Court ( Mineola). A lot of Nassau and Suffolk schools compete in this tournament every year.

Newspaper

Be a part of the Olmanac – the student newspaper – identifying, interviewing, writing and publishing the accomplishments, opinions, and news surrounding the Mustang community. We need student reporters, writers, photographers, and layout designers who are willing to scour the Mustang community for great stories, in-depth interviews, and well-crafted articles, and furthermore, be willing to design, publish, and circulate these stories to the community. All new staff participants will be supported by an upper-class team of veteran newspaper staffers.

Robotics

The Robotics team participates in the FIRST Robotics Competition, an annual tournament in which students build a robot in order to compete in the season’s game. Students engage in various disciplines such as electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, programming, and business while working alongside our engineering mentors. The team is also supplemented by the Robotics class, in which students utilize class time to explore the engineering and programming behind these competition-based robots.

Windows

Windows is a literary club and magazine. Every spring, the club produces a publication of students’ original poetry, prose, and artwork. In April, Windows hosts the Windows Tea to showcase the finished publication.

World Languages and Cultures

The members will develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the cultures of various ethnic groups in the world. They will accomplish this by experiencing the customs and behaviors of others. This may include speaking some of their languages, tasting ethnic foods, dancing traditional and modern dances and sharing traditions. Students will be aware that people are different but no one is deficient!! The Club will hold fundraisers and will donate the proceeds to a cultural group that is undergoing a difficult financial time.

Equality Club

Equality Club is a club that advocates for underrepresented and marginalized communities, educates on racism, brings awareness to social injustice, and helps to unify us. We plan on meeting during club blocks to talk about injustices and prejudice, coordinate events to raise funds for organizations fighting for the causes, sign petitions, and more to contribute to the cause.

Helping Hand Babysitting Club

Helping Hand Babysitters are reliable, compassionate, and trained volunteers who provide free babysitting to families who have been affected by cancer; whether it be a parent and/or child. Volunteers look after the siblings while the parent or child goes for medical treatment. Volunteers go in twos to each family, at least one volunteer is CPR trained.

Pax Christi

The goals of the club are to develop a deeper understanding of the critical concern of Nonviolence. How can we advocate for peace and nonviolence in the world today? Nonviolence against the environment, Nonviolence against women, Nonviolence and dignity of human life, Nonviolence and weapons of war. Nonviolence and Racial Justice. Nonviolence and immigration. Non Violence and Refugees and Migrants. How can we advocate for peace in our world? The club also aims to fundraise for organizations that help people recover from conflicts and violence and create dialogues of peace in our world.

Pro-Life

The mission of the Pro-Life Club is to learn about the issues surrounding pro-life debates and to pray and advocate for the protection of the dignity of every human life from conception until natural death. The concerns of the Pro-Life Club include, but are not limited to, abortion, euthanasia, stem cell research, and adoption. This club attends the March for Life in January and supports its members in learning how to confidently, charitably, and prayerfully defend the pro-life mission. Everyone is welcome to join.

RAK Club

The mission of RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) Club is to spread and promote kindness in the Mercy Community, having students interact with each other and the outside world in a way reflective of love and charity as the Mercy Sisters would do. (Fides, Mores, Cultura). Activities are planned for each club block by the President and Vice-President of the club, Emma Cahill and Giulian Copertino and all are welcome to join.

Relay for Life

The focus of this club is to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Our fundraisers include Purple Week, bake sales, candy-grams sales, collecting and redeeming all the school’s recycling.

SADD

SADD’s mission is to empower young people to successfully confront the risks and pressures that challenge them throughout their daily lives. Our goal is to educate students on topics such as alcohol, drugs, depression, etc. that can be detrimental to their health. SADD club puts on Red Ribbon Day each year to create awareness for alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention.

Band

Any student with one or more years of experience with their instrument can join. All woodwind, brass, percussion and string instruments are welcome. The band plays in the Christmas and spring concerts each year.

Guitar and Uke Club

This Tri-M student-led club is for students who like to play the ukulele and guitar. This club allows students an opportunity to learn the instrument, practice, and perform in the fall and spring on our “Tri-M Presents..” Concerts as well as in and around the school. Liturgical Music Club

The Liturgical Music Club is for any student who wants to be involved with the music at Mercy’s school Masses. Any student who enjoys singing or playing a musical instrument is welcome. There are no auditions to be a member of this club.

Mercy Sapphires

Led by Tri-M Music Honor Society Members, students learn basic choral/acapella techniques while singing fun pieces in two- and three-part harmonies. The group performs in the fall and the spring on our “Tri-M Presents…” Concerts and throughout the year in and around the school. All students in grades 9-12 are welcome to join. No audition is required.

Mercy Players / Stage Crew

The club creates opportunities for students to develop their communication and interpretive skills as actresses, artists, musicians as a member of the pit band, speakers, and technicians for the stage crew. Students will have a chance to demonstrate their artistic and personal growth through performing the school play. Students will be able to develop their skills while assuming responsibility and possibly a leadership role.

Meeting time: Rehearsals are every day after school from 3:10 – 4:45 pm. The schedule of rehearsals and additional Saturday rehearsals are distributed at the first meeting of the season. Mercy Players currently runs from September 9 – November 27.

Reverse Shakespeare

A unique performance group with all-female actors (the “reverse” of Shakespearean times). One abridged Shakespeare play is performed each spring outside by the gazebo. All students are welcome to audition in late February. There are student leadership roles in directing, music, stage management, costumes, and makeup.

Rehearsals are after school from 3:15 – 4:45 pm in the spring. Performances are late April or early May. Club members may meet with Mrs. Ward during the wellness block.

Mercy Dance Company & Performance Ensemble

Mercy Dance Company is committed to creating an environment where students from all levels and backgrounds of dance can become involved. Students have the unique opportunity to not only continue their dance training in their school setting, but also to choreograph pieces in styles of their choice, which not only develops their leadership skills, but allows them to interact with one another on a more personal and instructive level. Dancers train in various styles from traditional ballet and modern, to jazz, tap, and hip hop. Mercy Dance Company begins with auditions in September for dancers and choreographers, and rehearses throughout the year until the spring concert in May, as well as perform at the Christmas Concert. MDC Performance Ensemble is a subsection of Mercy Dance Company, composed of auditioned dancers at the most advanced level with extensive training and performance experiences. Performance Ensemble represents Mercy Dance at a variety of highly recognized events, including performances at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, LIU Post Tilles Center, Open House, Spirit Week, and Mercy liturgical Masses. Dancers in Performance Ensemble are constantly challenged throughout the year to be creative, collaborative, and most of all, confident, pushing the boundaries of dance, and reinventing themselves as dancers, performers, and choreographers.

Mercy Danceworks

Mercy Danceworks is a non-audition club that any student is welcome to join, regardless of previous dance experience. Students in this club meet weekly on Wednesdays to work on dance techniques and skills, as well as learn choreography for the Christmas Concert and Spring Dance Concert. Selected members of Dance Company lead Danceworks students through stretch and strengthening, technique class, and choreography. Students are exposed to various styles of dance, broadening students’ experiences, supplementing the work done during dance classes throughout the school day. Students can choose to remain members of Danceworks throughout their years at Mercy, or move on to audition for Dance Company the following year. Students learn the important aspects of being a team, commitment to a performance and group, as well as the many different parts of rehearsing and putting on a show.

Green Team

The Green Team provides an opportunity to enjoy group activities that bring us closer to nature on our own campus (“Campus Hike”), as well as other locations around Long Island (“hikes” to Target Rock State Park, Sunken Meadow Park, Jones Beach Park, etc). We like to kayak as well. There will also be opportunities to participate in community service activities for the environment and local conservation-oriented citizen science projects. Students are also encouraged to design and complete service campaigns within our school community.

Equestrian Club provides students with an opportunity to take horseback riding lessons at Thomas School of Horsemanship in Melville.

Craft Club

Craft Club provides a creative outlet for students that would like to make crafts to either keep or donate. Some of the projects we have donated (dog/cat beds for a local animal shelter, Veteran’s Day cards for the Long Island State Veteran’s Home, and squirrel hammocks for Volunteers for Wildlife) and some we have kept (reusable bags made from t-shirts, ornaments, small holiday crafts). We do one craft a month and the club is open to all students. Our crafts are made from donated supplies or from new supplies bought using money raised through bake sales.

The Tower

The objective of Yearbook Club is to create a dynamic and informative school yearbook with the leadership of senior yearbook editors and moderators. The club is open to all grades. Seniors seeking editor roles are encouraged to apply at the end of their junior year. Staff members set deadlines to collect information, images, prep and set up books for distribution in May/June.

Video Club

The main goal of the Video Club is the production of Mercy Morning News but we are so much more than one thing. MMNews provides a video platform for students to view stories about their fellow schoolmates in upcoming and recent school activities, as well as communicating greetings and words of encouragement to schoolmates and teachers in “shout-outs: on “Dear Mercy Morning News”.

Yoga Club

Yoga has the power to calm the mind and strengthen the body. In this club, we will go through a combination of physical and mental exercises that will leave you with a feeling of peace and strength. Each gentle twist, fold, or balance posture is linked to an inhale and an exhale. Yoga is accessible to everyone, no matter your age, size, shape, or level of flexibility. Therefore, the yoga club is open to all students & staff who wish to improve their mindfulness & explore their own authentic selves.
